Porcelain Veneers: How to Make Yours Last 15+ Years

Porcelain veneers are a big decision. You chose them because you wanted to change something about your smile, maybe a gap, a chip, or just a shape that never quite felt right. And now that you have them? You want them to last.

With the right care, porcelain veneers can easily last 15 years or longer. Some patients get two decades out of theirs. But they’re not magic. And they’re not indestructible. Dr. Mike Williamson wants every patient who gets veneers to feel confident about how to protect that investment. So let’s talk about what actually helps.

While porcelain veneers are durable and stain-resistant, they still require proper care to ensure they last for many years.

Know What You’re Working With

Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells that bond to the front of your teeth. They’re strong. They resist stains better than your natural enamel. But they’re not teeth. They don’t have the same flexibility or healing ability. That means a few things change once you have them.

You won’t get cavities in the veneer itself. Porcelain doesn’t decay. But the tooth underneath absolutely can. So keeping the edges clean where the veneer meets your natural tooth is critical.

Do’s and Don’ts for Everyday Life

Do:

  • Brush and floss normally. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush. Non-abrasive toothpaste is your friend. Avoid anything labeled “whitening,” “baking soda,” or “extra gritty.” Those can scratch the polished surface of your veneers over time.
  • Wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth. This is probably the single most important thing you can do. Grinding and clenching, especially at night, puts enormous stress on veneers. Many patients don’t even know they do it until their partner mentions the noise or Dr. Mike spots the wear patterns. A custom nightguard is cheap insurance compared to replacing a veneer.

Don’t:

  • Use your teeth as tools. This one matters more than you think. Opening bottles, ripping open packages, holding bobby pins? All bad ideas for natural teeth. Even worse for veneers. That thin porcelain can chip or crack under pressure.
  • Bite into anything rock hard. Think ice, hard candy, uncooked popcorn kernels, or crab legs. Use your back teeth for that stuff. Your veneers will thank you.

What About Coffee, Wine, and Berries?

Porcelain resists stains way better than natural enamel. So that morning coffee or evening glass of red wine? Less of a worry than you’d think.

However, the cement that holds the veneer on and the natural tooth edge at the gumline can still stain over time. So rinsing with water after dark drinks is still a smart habit.

Regular Checkups Aren’t Optional

We know. Nobody loves hearing “come see us twice a year.” But with veneers, those checkups matter more.

Dr. Mike will check the edges for any tiny gaps or wear. He’ll make sure your bite hasn’t shifted in a way that puts pressure on the wrong spots. And our hygienists know exactly how to clean veneers without scratching or damaging them.

If a veneer ever feels rough, changes color, or starts to separate at the gumline? Don’t wait. Call us. Small fixes are usually simple. Waiting can turn a quick repair into a full replacement.
