Back to School Dental Checklist for Orange County Parents

Summer in Hillsborough is winding down. The pool days are getting shorter, the school supply lists are out, and before you know it, those yellow buses will be rolling around again. Between buying notebooks and new sneakers, there’s one more thing that belongs on your back to school to-do list: your child’s smile.

Why Dental Health Matters

A healthy mouth isn’t just about looking good in school pictures. It affects how your child eats, speaks, sleeps, and even concentrates in class. Pain from a cavity or an aching tooth can make it hard to focus on math problems or enjoy lunch with friends. The good news? A little preparation goes a long way.

Here’s your simple back-to-school dental checklist from Dr. Mike Williamson and our team.

1. Schedule That Checkup Before the Rush

August is busy. We get it. But September and October get even busier. Once school starts, everyone remembers they need a sports physical or a dental form filled out.

Getting your child in now means fewer headaches later. Dr. Mike can catch any small issues, like a tiny cavity or a wobbly baby tooth that’s hanging on too long, before they become bigger problems during the school year. Plus, you’ll have plenty of time to get those school and sports forms signed without the last-minute panic.

2. Don’t Forget the Mouthguard

If your child plays any organized sport, such as soccer, football, basketball, lacrosse, or even gymnastics, a mouthguard is non-negotiable. We’re not just being cautious. Dental injuries are the most common type of orofacial injury in sports. A single stray elbow or a ball to the face can chip, fracture, or even knock out a permanent tooth.

The store-bought ones are better than nothing. But a custom-fitted mouthguard from Dr. Mike stays in place better, lets your child breathe and speak clearly, and offers way more protection. It’s a small investment for peace of mind on the field.

3. Pack a Tooth-Friendly Lunch

You can’t control what your child eats at school. But you can pack a lunch that helps their teeth.

Skip the sticky fruit snacks and gummy treats. They cling to teeth and feed cavity-causing bacteria longer than almost anything else. Same goes for sugary drinks like juice boxes or sports drinks.

Instead, think crunchy: apple slices, carrot sticks, celery, or cheese. These foods actually help clean teeth while your child eats. Water is the best drink option; it rinses away food particles and doesn’t leave behind sugar.

And if your child buys lunch? Remind them to swish some water around after eating. Small habit, big difference.

4. Make Brushing Fun Again

Summer schedules are relaxed. Bedtimes slip. Brushing routines get lazy. We hear it from parents every September.

Now’s the time to reset. A fun new toothbrush, maybe one with their favorite character or in their school color, can make a difference. Let them pick out a fluoride toothpaste flavor they actually like. And if your child is 7 or older, now’s a great time to remind them that they’re old enough to handle their own brushing. Just check in occasionally to make sure they’re reaching the back teeth.

Two minutes, twice a day. That’s the magic number.

5. Sports Forms and Dental Records

Your school or athletic league might need a dental health form. We’re happy to fill those out during your regular checkup. Just remind us at the front desk when you schedule your appointment.

We’ll also make sure we have your current contact information. That way, if anything happens during the school year, a dental emergency during practice or a broken bracket from that forbidden popcorn at lunch, we’re ready to help right away.

A Little Prep Goes a Long Way

Your child’s smile has a big year ahead. School pictures, class presentations, team photos, and plenty of laughing with friends. A quick checkup now means fewer interruptions later. Dr. Mike and our team love seeing our youngest neighbors and making sure they’re ready to shine.
