Let’s be honest: hearing the words tooth extraction can make anyone a little nervous. It sounds so… official. So permanent. Maybe you had a not-so-great experience as a kid, or maybe you’ve just heard stories.
Here at our Hillsborough office, we get it. Dr. Mike Williamson and our team know that for many of our patients, the idea of having a tooth pulled is the scariest part of visiting the dentist. So, we wanted to pull back the curtain and walk you through what an extraction at our practice actually looks like. Because most of the time, it’s not nearly as intimidating as it sounds.

First, Let’s Talk About Why
We never jump straight to pulling a tooth. That’s not how we do things. Dr. Williamson always looks for the least invasive path first. In fact, one of our favorite patient reviews mentions exactly that: “He tries to do the less invasive procedures if possible.”
So why might an extraction become the right option? It’s usually for a few clear reasons:
- Severe Decay: A cavity has gotten so deep that there isn’t enough healthy tooth structure left to support a filling or a crown.
- Infection: An infection has reached the pulp (the very center of the tooth) and a root canal isn’t an option, or the tooth is too compromised to be saved.
- Overcrowding: Sometimes, especially with younger patients, we need to remove a tooth to make room for the others to grow in straight. This is a common step before orthodontic work.
- Impacted Wisdom Teeth: Those third molars often don’t have enough room to come in properly, which can lead to pain, infection, or damage to the teeth around them.
If an extraction is on the table, Dr. Williamson will sit down with you, look you in the eye, and explain exactly why it’s the best path forward for your long-term health. He won’t rush you. He’ll answer every single question.
What Happens on the Day?
This is where we focus on making sure you feel safe and comfortable. Our whole team is trained to help anxious patients feel at ease.
Numbing the Area
The first step is always making sure you won’t feel a thing. We’ll use a local anesthetic to completely numb the tooth and the surrounding gum tissue. You might feel a tiny pinch, but after that, you should only feel pressure, not pain.
A Gentle Procedure
For a simple extraction (where the tooth is already visible in the mouth), Dr. Williamson uses specialized instruments to gently loosen the tooth and remove it. For a more complex extraction, like a broken tooth or an impacted wisdom tooth, you might need a small incision. But again, you will be numb, and Dr. Williamson will explain what he’s doing every step of the way. He’s known for checking in with patients, just like Beth mentioned in her review: “Dr. Mike always asked for a signal if I’m uncomfortable in any way.”
Clear Aftercare
Once the tooth is out, we’ll place gauze over the site. Then we’ll give you very clear, simple instructions for the next few days. We’ll talk about managing any soreness, what to eat (think smoothies and soup!), and how to keep the area clean while it heals.
Your Comfort is Our Priority
Having a tooth removed isn’t anyone’s idea of a fun day. But at Hillsborough Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, our goal is to make it a calm, dignified, and painless experience. You’re not just a patient; you’re a neighbor. And we treat your smile, and your peace of mind, like we would our own family’s.
If you’ve been worried about a tooth, or if you’re just ready to get that nagging discomfort taken care of, give us a call or request an appointment online. Let’s talk about it. No pressure, no judgment, just a conversation about the best way to help you feel better.
